Retrospective: First Event at Beaver Valley Ski Club

Retrospective: First Event at Beaver Valley Ski Club

Last month, I had the chance to showcase Barbarian Bar Fitness equipment at the Beaver Valley Ski Club Men’s Day event. It was my first time bringing the brand out to an in-person event and I wanted to document my findings in a retrospective format so I can improve for next time.

Here are a few reflections on how it went, what I learned, and some well-deserved shoutouts to the people who made the day so memorable.

What Went Well

1. The banner
I couldn’t have been happier with how the banner turned out. It was clean, easy to read, and grabbed attention right away.

2. QR-code stickers
These were a surprise hit! People loved grabbing them to stick on their snowboards and gear. It was such a simple way to get the brand out there, and they became a great conversation starter.

3. The video reel
Seeing the demo reel playing throughout the main lodge was a proud moment. It was exciting to see people watch, point, and then come over to learn more.

4. The display setup
Using a portable squat rack to showcase the equipment worked perfectly. It was clean, professional, and really showed off the quality and design of the Barbarian Mace and the Barbarian Long Bar.

5. The donation
I donated a Barbarian Long Bar and a Barbarian Mace in elderberry blue as part of the event prizes — and they ended up in the best hands possible. The winner and his family are all athletic, involved in hockey, tennis, baseball, golf, and squash. We even got together the following weekend for a workout, and I was able to build training protocols for them. Watching people discover and fall in love with this equipment is what it’s all about for me.

6. Support from the event staff
The team at Beaver Valley Ski Club was incredible. The event coordinator checked in on me throughout the night, and friends made sure I stayed hydrated as I talked to dozens of people non-stop. That support didn’t go unnoticed!

What Can Be Improved

1. Bring merch
A lot of people asked if they could buy a t-shirt or sweater right there — and I wasn’t set up for that. Next time, I’ll have apparel on-site, ready to go.

2. Have a dedicated demo monitor
My demo reel was part of a longer loop playing throughout the lodge, but I missed having a monitor next to the equipment running my reel on repeat. That direct connection would have made a difference.

3. Be ready for live demos
I didn’t plan to give demonstrations, but I quickly realized they were needed. Next time, I’ll be ready to step in and show people how to use the equipment safely and effectively.

4. Secure storage for equipment
Late-night parties and fitness equipment don’t mix! Thankfully, the staff helped me securely store everything after hours, but it’s something I’ll plan for ahead of time going forward.

5. Focus on the right demographic
I had great conversations with fitness-minded skiers and snowboarders, but my next event will be more directly fitness-focused — and I’m already looking forward to the True North True Strength 2025 Open!

6. Promote ahead of time
I should have collaborated on social posts leading up to the event to help build excitement and awareness. Lesson learned!

7. Pamphlets
I’ll be bringing printed materials next time with key product details, exercise ideas, and space requirements. Something simple people can take home with them.

8. Bring a team
Having at least one trainer alongside me would have allowed for more one-on-one interactions and demonstrations. That’s a must for the next event.
